In the last few months, cities in California and around the United States have embraced home sharing by changing their local laws to make it easier for people to share their home.

However, a new bill that is being introduced in California, Senate Bill 593, would require online companies like Airbnb to share private, sensitive user data with local zoning officials and would make home sharing more difficult across the state.

We don't think this is right. SB 593 is moving through the California Legislature, and the time to act is now.

Please join thousands of Californians and speak out in support of home sharing.

Click here to automatically email the letter below with your name and email address to California State Senators to let them know you oppose SB 593.

    Dear Senator,

I am writing to urge you to oppose SB 593, an anti-innovation proposal by Senator McGuire that would greatly harm the burgeoning home sharing movement. If this legislation passes, it could negatively impact thousands of middle class Californians.

As hosts and guests on Airbnb, we favor clear and fair rules that embrace the new sharing economy, and we want to pay our fair share. As written, SB 593 enables neither of those things.

SB 593 would require platforms like Airbnb to turn over private, sensitive user data to local zoning officials each quarter, without subpoena or legal process. This is an unprecedented overreach and intrusion of my privacy rights as an online consumer.

For hosts, home sharing allows Californians to turn what is typically one of our greatest expenses into an asset to pay bills and help make ends meet. For guests, Airbnb provides opportunities for unique, local travel accommodations and generates sustainable economic impacts that support small businesses across the state.

If passed, SB 593 would harm neighborhood small businesses across the state and chill innovations that are providing incredible new opportunities for many middle class Californians. Let’s come together and find the right solution on home sharing regulation.

    Please oppose SB 593.

    Thank you

You can make a difference today by sending this letter to the California Senate in support of home sharing.

    Sincerely,
    The Airbnb Team

Is it effective for lots of people to send form letters to their senator?

Of course users of AirBnB aren't going to want their private sensitive data shared.
